Dr. Konstantinos Dretakis was born in Athens in 1965. He is married and has three children. He is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with extensive clinical, academic and international experience, with particular expertise in robotic-assisted hip and knee arthroplasty, the management of hip fractures, and the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.
Education and Postgraduate Training
Dr. Dretakis graduated from Athens College in 1983 and obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Patras School of Medicine in 1990. He completed his residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University Hospital of Crete, one of the leading academic orthopaedic centres in Greece. In 1997, he was awarded a PhD with Honours by the University of Crete for his doctoral research on hip fractures and osteoporosis.
From 1996 to 2000, he undertook advanced postgraduate training and clinical appointments in the United Kingdom at Bristol Royal Infirmary and Avon Orthopaedic Centre, focusing on hip surgery as well as upper and lower limb reconstructive surgery. During this period, he was awarded two competitive scholarships by the Hellenic Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (1997, 1999) for advanced subspecialty training in joint surgery. In 1997, he represented Greece in Spain through a travelling fellowship programme, delivering invited lectures and participating in advanced clinical training at major orthopaedic centres.
Clinical and Academic Appointments
From 2006 to 2016, Dr. Dretakis served as Director and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Metropolitan Hospital in Athens, where he established the Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases Clinic, which subsequently developed into a national reference centre.
In 2011, he became the first Greek orthopaedic surgeon to receive formal training and certification in robotic-assisted hip and knee surgery in the United States, having completed dedicated training programmes at specialised centres in Florida and Chicago. In 2014, he introduced robotic orthopaedic surgery to Greece at Metropolitan Hospital. Since 2015, he has served as an international faculty member and instructor in robotic orthopaedic surgery, based in the United States, providing structured training and certification to orthopaedic surgeons in Europe (the Netherlands and Luxembourg), the Middle East, Israel, Russia and the United States.
Since 2017, he has been Director of the 2nd Orthopaedic Department at HYGEIA Hospital, Athens. Since 2019, he has also served as Scientific Director of the Orthopaedic Educational Programme at HYGEIA Hospital, which is officially incorporated into the national educational curriculum of the Hellenic Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology.
Athens Orthopaedic Institute
In 2021, Dr. Dretakis founded the Athens Orthopaedic Institute, a comprehensive orthopaedic centre based at HYGEIA Hospital. The mission of the Institute is threefold: to deliver personalised, evidence-based orthopaedic care using state-of-the-art technologies; to provide structured education and advanced hands-on training in robotic surgery to medical students and orthopaedic surgeons from around the world; and to promote high-quality clinical and translational research.
Scientific Output and Research Activity
Dr. Dretakis has authored and co-authored 20 original peer-reviewed scientific articles published in high-impact international journals in the United States and Europe, indexed in Index Medicus, which to date have received more than 1,000 citations. He has additionally published 35 articles in Greek peer-reviewed journals and has delivered more than 150 invited and free-paper presentations at national and international scientific congresses. His principal research interests include robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery, hip fracture management, osteoporosis, joint arthroplasty, and vitamin D research.
He has served as principal investigator in major multicentre clinical studies, including the EPOS study on fracture prevention, the European Meloxicam Study, and the EFOS and ExFOS studies on teriparatide. He is also the author of a textbook on sports injuries, distributed to medical students at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens since 2003. Since 2005, he has participated on a regular basis in the continuing medical education programme of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in Rosemont, Illinois, USA.
Honours, Professional Memberships and Languages
In recognition of his scientific contributions, Dr. Dretakis has been listed in the international scientific directory Who’s Who in America since 1999. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the General Medical Council (GMC), the European Hip Society, the Hellenic Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, and the Hellenic Society for the Study of Bone Metabolism. He is fluent in English and has working proficiency in French and Italian.
